Flowerbeds
When it comes to a garden design, flowers are the foremost factor to come with. And to splash color in different season, annuals & bulbs are the ultimate choice, and there comes the importance of flowerbeds. Unless the preparation is good, the desired result cannot be achieved. The followings are the major factors for flowerbeds.
Location
Think about a place for flowerbeds, which can be viewed from normal viewpoints and is not obstructed by large trees, hedges or any other factors. Most flowering plants require a large amount of sunlight. So when choosing location for flowerbeds, try to choose place where six to eight hours of sunlight is available. But beside this, in tropical countries some species do well in four to five hours of sunlight.
Shape
One can choose any shape, which goes well with the existing landscape. Normally regular geometric shapes are preferable like square, rectangular, circular etc. But it is a good practice to design it likewise so that the most inner plants can also be reached from the periphery, as it will help in the maintenance of the plants.
Soil
It is the most important factor. Most of the plants prefer porous and well drained soil. For a new flowerbed, remove half meter of soil & fill it up with the compost consists of two part of finely ground soil, with one part of farmyard manure and one part of leaf mould. Also mix with that 200 gm bonemeal, 100 gm super phosphate and 50 gm sulphate of potash per sq. meter.
Planting
Arrange plants in ascending order of height from the viewpoint, i.e. the higher ones should be kept behind; keeping proper distance in between plants is an essential for profuse blooms. In tropical country like India, try to plant seedlings or cuttings in the afternoon; if not then cover it for 2-3 days with polythene sheet to save it from the harsh sunlight.
