Herbs
In ancient time mankind was
solely dependent on herbal plants to cure illness. Still now,
they are very much in use in different part of world. In
medical science "Ayurveda" has a vast contribution
which mainly based on herbs. Definition of herbs can be like
this, a plant grown for medicinal or culinery purpose. The
whole plant or some of its parts are used for. There are four
basic methods for propagating herbal plants, the propagating
method varies from plant to plant. The four methods are from
seed, making root divisions, cuttings & layering. All of
them may not be possible for a single type. You have to
choose the right one for the particular species.
Kalmegh or Kiryat
Kalmegh or Andrographis Paniculata is a tropical or subtropical herb found throughout the Indian subcontinent, as well as Thailand and China. It is cultivated as a medicinal herb in India and China. It is an annual herb attaining a height of one meter approximately. The flowers are small and white or pale-purple. It grows well in full sun and prefers loamy soil. And also can be grown in part shade. The seeds can be shown directly in ground. The whole plant is used in medicine. This herb posses a vast medicinal quality, mostly consist of antihepatotoxic, antibiotic, antimalarial, antihepatitic, antithrombogenic, antiinflammatory, antisnakevenom, and antipyretic, to mention a few. Traditionally, it is used for flu, fevers, including malaria, wounds, ulcers, inflammations, skin diseases, intestinal worms, and digestive disorders. The herb has got a bitter taste, and commonly called "King of Bitter".
Tulsi
Basil or Ocimum Basilicum is a popular, tender, annual herb. It is native to India and Asia. Basil is grown for its aromatic leaves and medicinal purpose.
Basil or Tulsi is worshipped in India, as the beloved of the Lord Vishnu. In many homes are special alters where a pot of Tulsi is kept and as part of the families daily routine the women, every morning and every evening perform a ritual prayer to the plant, the protector of life. They prefer full sun and a moist, well drained soil. This is a perennial herb and should be cut at least four to six leaves above the ground for regrowth. Its leaf color can be purple or green, suitable for an ornamental garden also. The medicinal properties are antispasmodic, antidepressant, antiseptic, stimulating, antibacterial, diaphoretic, appetizer.
Pudina or Peppermint
Mint or Mentha Piperita is a perennial herb, growing upto 3 feet in height. It is also grown for it's aromatic leaves and medicinal qualities & widely cultivated in India as an economical crop. They grow well in part shades and moist well drained soil. The medicinal properties are Carminative, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-spasmodic, Aromatic, Diaphoretic, Anti-emetic, Nervine, Anti-microbial, Analgesic, Stimulant, Stomachic, Rubefacient. Peppermint when applied locally on skin has a soothing and cooling effect. Peppermint and its main active agent, menthol, are effective decongestants. As menthol thins mucus, it acts as a good expectorant. It is also soothing and calming for sore throats and dry coughs.
